College football continues tonight, with a few big teams but no really big games on tap. The high stakes contests are reserved for tomorrow and Sunday, and we will take you inside the numbers on those days, too.
We will look at five games this evening, provide some trends and numbers, and give picks for each.
Charlotte at Eastern Michigan (ESPN3, 6:30) -- The 49ers joined FBS in 2015 and have won six games in two years, though last year was an improvement, to 4-8; Charlotte won its first ever FBS road opener in 2015 by three points, and is 1-1 in such situations; As an away dog, Charlotte is 5-6-1 ATS; Eastern Michigan beat Charlotte by 18 points last year, the first time it had been a road favorite since 2005; EMU is just 4-6 ATS the last 10 times it has opened the season at home with an FBS foe; the Eagles are just 3-10 as home favorites ATS since 2007. Line -- EMU by 14; Pick -- Eastern Michigan 40, Charlotte 21
Navy at Florida Atlantic (ESPNU, 8) -- The Middies are 10-3 SU in true road openers since 2004 but just 1-2 in its last three road openers vs. FBS foes; Navy is a healthy 7-3 as an away favorite the last three seasons; the Owls are 4-8 SU when hosting a non-league FBS program since becoming an FBS program in 2004; FAU is 3-6 as a home dog ATS and has covered its first FBS game of the season in each of the last three years; this will be Lane Kiffin's coaching debut in Boca Raton. Line -- Navy by 10; Pick -- Florida Atlantic 34, Navy 32
Colorado State at Colorado (Pac 12, 8) -- A rivalry game that's been played every year since 1995, and the Rams are just 7-19 since 1987; Prior to last year's blowout 44-7 Buffs victory, the previous four games had been decided by a total of 36 points; CSU is just 4-9 ATS in neutral site games and just 1-3 in the L4 vs. CU; the Buffs are 7-2 since 2007 in Denver, average margin of 16 ppg; CU is 6-5-1 in neutral site contests since 2007, but just 1-3-1 the L5. Line -- Colorado by 3.5; Pick -- Colorado State 31, Colorado 28
Washington at Rutgers (FS1, 8) -- The Huskies are fresh off of an appearance in the College Football Playoff, and one of their wins last season was a 48-13 blasting of Rutgers at home; UW is 6-3 ATS the last three years as road favorites, and 2-1-1 ATS vs the Big Ten; UW is 3-12 ATS in true road openers since 2001, and 1-9 on the road vs non-league Power5 teams; Rutgers was shut out four times last season and averaged just 15.7 ppg, but Jerry Kill comes in as the new OC; Rutgers is 4-7 L3Y as a home dog, but 7-5 ATS vs non-conference foes, including 2-1 vs the Pac-12. UW will be without linebacker Azeem Victor, who is serving a suspension. Line -- Washington by 27.5; Pick -- Washington 44, Rutgers 20
Utah State at Wisconsin (ESPN, 9) -- The Aggies have lost 34 straight when facing current Power5 teams on the road (last win against Utah in 1997), and has lost 19 straight road openers; Utah State is 28-16 ATS as a road dog since 2007, but just 4-7 the last three seasons; Wisconsin has been bitten by the injury bug in camp, losing two starting linebackers Jack Cichy and Zack Baun; the Badgers have won 21 straight openers at Camp Randall Stadium, by an average of 24 ppg; Wisky is just 8-10-1 ATS as a home favorite the last three seasons, but 9-5 ATS vs. non-conference opposition. Line -- Wisconsin by 27.5; Pick -- Wisconsin 41, Utah State 16
